Oh, Shrek. You came into our hearts a decade ago and refuse to leave. Even when your box office receipts dipped, you kept showing up – at the cinema and on home video – until DreamWorks Animation decided they had finally beaten the proverbial dead donkey past its prime and brought the franchise to a close. Or did they?
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has recorded an interview with Fox Business Network scheduled to air today and according to Variety, he had something to say about Shrek, Donkey, and the rest of the ogre-sized universe.
“We like to let them have a little bit of time to rest,” Katzenberg allegedly told Fox Business Network. “But I think you can be confident that we’ll have another chapter in the Shrek series. We’re not finished, and more importantly, neither is he.”
The four Shrek features have grossed almost $3 billion worldwide. That’s not including merchandising, direct-to-dvd releases, or the holiday themed television specials.
DreamWorks conveniently announced on Monday that they are planning to open a Shrek-themed live attraction in London sometime during summer 2015. The attraction will take visitors through a live interactive adventure featuring Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots and other characters from the franchise. It is be the first of six “Shrek” attractions to be rolled out over the next nine years.
There is no word yet on when the full Katzenberg interview will be available, but we will keep an eye out for additional details regarding this, and the rest of DreamWorks’ beloved franchises.
